An idea that started right here in Kitchener is starting to take hold elsewhere. Last year, the Kitchener-Waterloo Community Foundation started Random Act of Kindness Day and this year - on November 13 - it's also being celebrated in Cambridge and London. Organizers hope future years will bring more cities on board, eventually becoming a national event.

Thursday night was the kickoff for the first Board Governance program, designed and delivered by Wilfrid Laurier University. There was a great buzz in the room and participants gave some thoughtful introductions on what they'd like to get out of the program. The one thing I heard over and over again was the hope for new ideas, new connections, and conversations that give food for thought. We recently announced that Cathy Brothers will be joining Capacity Waterloo Region in February as our Executive-Director-in-Residence, playing a lead role in shaping a one-of-a-kind program that we expect will be a model for other communities. We're delighted, and judging from the many emails we've received, the community is really excited too and looking forward to having Cathy on board.

The Civics Research Cooperative reported last week that a vision is emerging for a Centre for Community Innovation and Design (CCID) here in Waterloo Region. For three days this November, social enterprise leaders from across the country will gather in Toronto for intensive training sessions and development of a national policy agenda and action plan for social enterprise in Canada. Day three features a couple of interesting tours of Toronto social enterprises and day two wraps up with a keynote from Liam Black, a successful UK social entrepreneur recently involved in expanding Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant into a global brand.
